The Importance of IP Warming: Essentials to High Email Deliverability

In today’s digital landscape, email marketing remains one of the most effective ways to engage with customers and drive conversions. However, ensuring that your emails actually reach their intended recipients is crucial. This is where IP warming comes into play. In this blog, we’ll discuss the importance of IP warming and how it can significantly enhance your email marketing success like it did for our retail partners at Art.com and Allposters.com.

First Off, What is IP Warming?

IP warming is the gradual process of increasing the volume of emails sent from a new or previously unused IP address. Instead of sending a large volume of emails all at once, which can raise red flags with Internet Service Providers (ISPs), marketers incrementally increase their sending volume over time. This strategy helps build a positive sender reputation and improves the chances of reaching the inbox.

Why is IP Warming Important?

Establishing Trust with ISPs

ISPs are on the lookout for spammers and low-quality senders. When a new IP starts sending a high volume of emails, it raises suspicion. IP warming helps establish trust with ISPs by demonstrating a consistent and legitimate sending pattern. A good reputation is crucial for ensuring that your emails aren’t mistakenly classified as spam.

Enhancing Deliverability Rates

High deliverability rates are the goal of every email marketer. By warming your IP, you can significantly improve your chances of getting your emails into the inbox rather than the spam folder. A positive sender reputation, built through gradual volume increases, leads to higher engagement and better deliverability over time.

Minimizing Bounce Rates

Sudden spikes in email volume can lead to increased bounce rates, especially if your email list includes inactive or invalid addresses. IP warming allows you to carefully monitor and clean your list, reducing the chances of bounces. Keeping your bounce rates low is essential for maintaining a healthy sender reputation.

Gaining Valuable Insights

As you warm your IP, you’ll gather crucial data about your audience’s engagement. Monitoring metrics such as open rates, click-through rates, and unsubscribe rates can provide insights into what content resonates with your audience. This information can be used to refine your email marketing strategy for better results.

Building Long-Term Engagement

A warmed IP not only ensures better deliverability for your current campaigns but also lays the groundwork for future success. By building a strong reputation, you’re more likely to maintain high engagement levels in future email marketing efforts. Consistent engagement can lead to improved customer loyalty and retention.

Success Story:

How our IP Remediation Plan + IP Warming Plan Turned Around Art.com and Allposters.com Email Deliverability Trouble

One of our retail partners approached us with challenges related to email deliverability from their Salesforce Marketing Cloud sends after three months on the platform. Offprem took on the task of remediating the existing IPs for two brands / domains: Art.com and Allposters.com. If that wasn’t successful, we planned to warm up a new IP in the meantime. This approach gave us two opportunities for success.

The Plan: We began with an audit of the email content, unsubscribe functionality, and subscriber data. After making some recommendations and adjustments, we were ready to implement both strategies: a remediation plan for the existing IPs and an IP warming plan for the new IPs, per brand. The remediation plan involved suppressing existing blocks from future email sends until the block bounces were resolved. Then, we gradually reintroduced those previously blocked subscribers into the daily email send audiences. At the same time, we were warming up a new IP as a backup in case the remediation plan did not succeed.

The Outcome: Both strategies proved effective! We transformed the existing IP’s reputation from “bad” to “high” while successfully warming the new IP to achieve a “high” reputation as well (See the improved IP Reputation for Art.com below). This success boosted the confidence in their email marketing strategies moving forward while generating increased revenue for the business.

IP warming is a fundamental aspect of email marketing that should not be overlooked. In today’s competitive digital landscape, establishing and maintaining a good sender reputation is crucial for success. By implementing a well-structured IP warming strategy, you can enhance your email deliverability, minimize bounce rates, and foster long-term engagement with your audience. Invest the time and effort into this process, and reap the rewards of effective email marketing!
